[Home Museum] Gabriele Münter

by Home curator 2025. 1. 7.

Gabriele Münter (1877~1962)

Gabrielle Münter, born in Berlin, first met Kandinsky at an art school in Munich in 1901, when she was 24 years old.

However, he was already married and living in Russia. Despite this, they started living together in the small Bavarian village of Murnau.

They emphasized the philosophical aspects of art, traveled across Europe and Africa, and collaborated in their creative pursuits.

A few years later, Kandinsky divorced his wife but returned to Russia in 1914 due to citizenship issues. In Moscow, he secretly married the daughter of a general.

Münter learned about Kandinsky's new marriage four years later through a lawyer, along with a request to send back his works that were stored in Murnau.

As a subtle act of revenge, Münter withheld some of his works. She later donated those pieces to an art museum.

Enjoy her New Year's greeting cards, which she created annually, and her paintings of the village of Murnau.
